AL-2005.015 -- AUSCERT ALERT
phpBB vulnerability allows arbitrary code execution
30 June 2005

===========================================================================

AusCERT Alert Summary
---------------------

Product: phpBB 2.0.15 and prior
Operating System: Linux variants
UNIX variants
Windows
Impact: Execute Arbitrary Code/Commands
Access: Remote/Unauthenticated

Original Bulletin: http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=302011

OVERVIEW:

The popular web bulletin board system, phpBB, contains a vulnerability
allowing remote execution of code. AusCERT believes that this
vulnerability may be actively exploited by attackers in the near future,
or potentially incorporated in a self-propagating worm.

IMPACT:

Systems running vulnerable versions of phpBB may allow remote arbitrary
code execution. Potential impacts could include defacing any hosted
websites, installing malware such as backdoors and botnet clients, or
disabling the vulnerable system.

In addition, an attacker may incorporate exploits targeting this
vulnerability into a self-propagating worm designed to locate and
compromise vulnerable systems. This behaviour was previously used in
December 2004 by the Santy worm, described in AL-2004.044 [1].

MITIGATION:

Upgrade to phpBB 2.0.16, which is available from the phpBB website [2].
The phpBB web site additionally outlines a code change that will fix
this vulnerability [3].

AusCERT also recommends that network administrators audit their
networks to determine if any vulnerable versions of phpBB exist, and
either remove or update them.
